Looking Beyond the Selfie

Unveiling Philanthropic Trends Among Canada’s Generation Z and Millennial Donors

The Future of Giving: Looking Beyond the Selfie – is a new study released by PayPal Giving Fund Canada and AgentsC Inc. highlighting philanthropy among Canada’s younger populations.

The study shares insights into Generation Z (ages 18 to 26), Late Millennial (ages 27 to 33), and Early Millennial (ages 34 to 42) attitudes about generosity and how they use digital platforms to enable generosity.

A glimpse of the data from the report – download for more insights!

  • Transparency about finances or use of donations is the most common way Gen Z and Millennial respondents cited to increase trust in charities and/or non-profit organizations.
  • Gen Z has a strong interest in leadership roles such as serving on the board of a charitable and/or non-profit organization.
  • Facebook and Instagram are the most used online platforms when engaging in acts of generosity.

We want to bring new knowledge and insights and help the Canadian charitable sector future-proof their giving initiatives. The answers we received from Generation Z and Millennials to our survey will help us better understand how they might support causes they care about in the coming years. We also got a glimpse into what might encourage them to give more in the future.

It is important to know not only how young people respond to opportunities to be generous but also to understand how ethno-diverse people express philanthropy in their own unique ways. In this report we clearly see that among ethno-diverse groups a variety of phone applications and online platforms are utilized, when it comes to giving. This leaves room for us to learn more about cultural philanthropic preferences in the future.
